Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Most ylang ylang is produced in Indonesia, India, Madagascar, and the Philippines. It is also native to parts of Thailand and Vietnam. Ylang ylang likes full sun and should be planted in at least zone 10a, hardiness zone 10b being better. The tree is cold intolerant, which limits its cultivation to warm coastal areas. Ylang ylang trees grows about 16 feet per year, reaching an average height of 39 feet in an ideal climate. The compound evergreen leaves are pinnate, smooth and glossy, 5-8.5 inches long. Leaflets are oval, pointed and with wavy margins. The flower is drooping, long-stalked, with six narrow, greenish-yellow (rarely pink) petals, rather like a sea-star in appearance, and yields a highly fragrant essential oil. Ylang ylang trees are usually propagated from seed, which can be collected from mature fruits. Fresh seeds germinate erratically, so dried seeds stored for 6-12 months have higher germination rates. Seeds should be sown about 1/4″ deep in moist potting mix, and kept warm and evenly moist. Ylang ylang can also be propagated from cuttings, but success varies. Vibrant stems should be selected, sterilized shears used, and rooting hormone applied. Young plants can be grown individually in pots, with the size of pot depending on the size of the root network. Direct seeding in the field is a common method for establishing plantings When grown for essential oil production, ylang ylang trees are pruned to keep them shorter and make it easier to reach the flowers. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing. May cause allergic reaction or skin sensitivities. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
