It has also been reported to cause mild euphoria, visual changes, dizziness, nausea, sweating, sedation, and lightheadedness. It is sometimes used as a Cannabis substitute by recreational users as an alternative to illegal psychoactive plants. Klip Dagga has been smoked in combination with marijuana by peoples in Africa in order to extend the effects. The leaves can be made into tinctures or teas to help mild pain. In South Africa, some women have smoked wild dagga to lose awareness of pain during childbirth. It has anti-nociceptive properties (inhibits pain sensations), and is anti-inflammatory. Many people use the herb for arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Bees, butterflies, and nectivorous birds love the flowers of wild dagga. This species has leathery leaves and will become a shrub where it is happy. This shrub is a perennial in zones 8-11 (Deep South, Pacific Northwest, no prolonged temperatures below 40°F) and an annual everywhere else. It is a large evergreen shrub native to South Africa and southern Africa. The seeds can take 10 days to germinate. Once the plant has two sets of true leaves and has been hardened off (gotten used to outside temps and sun), transplant to full sun, rich soil, and heavy feeding (try odorless fish emulsion) so that this plant can gain its width of 4 feet (1.5 m) and height of up to 15 feet (3-4 m) in subtropical areas. Klip Dagga is an annual plant that can be grown indoors, but thrives outside.  It can be grown in a wide variety of soil types, but prefers well-drained rich beds.  Many people who grow it prefer to use pure compost as a growing medium to maximize plant health, leaf and stalk size. Plant Klip Dagga in full sun (they thrive at temperatures of 86°F and higher).  Once established, they grow quickly and will soak up as much water as you can give them.  Without regular and generous amounts of water, these tall plants will start to tip or lean in one direction.  Use tall stakes to support your plants once they reach two feet in height to help support the weight of the flowers. The plant has tubular orange flowers in tiered whorls that encircle the square stems. They rise above the foliage mass in the summer season, with flowering continuing into winter in warmer climates. It should bloom the first year, but make sure it gets sufficient water. It naturally has a long growing season, so if you want to see flowers on the plant and you live in the north, gradually plant it up to a very large pot and bring it inside in the winter. In spring put it out after all danger of frost is past, and it should flower. Do not water much in winter whether it is inside or outside (in subtropics, winter is dry time). It can be grown indoors in a sunny window and of course will not get anywhere near as tall, not only because it is in a pot but because it loves sun. This is a lanky plant, so if you want it to be bushy, cut it back. The flowers come out in the cooler months, and the plant likes room to get flowers.  If it is crowded, it will just keep growing and making leaves. Propagate this plant by stem cuttings.  Cut off a three-inch piece of stem and dip immediately in rooting hormone, which you can get at most gardening stores.  Then plant in sterile soil, something specifically sold for growing seeds, that has been wetted with liquid kelp solution. The stem piece should make roots in 2-4 weeks. Many growers harvest the flower petals regularly throughout the season by gently pulling on each petal, which releases it from the pod. In the fall, after all the flower petals have been gathered, the spiny clusters of the Klip Dagga plant can be cut away from the stems and dried.  As they dry, tiny black seeds will be released, so it’s important to dry them in such a manner to capture the seeds.  A kitchen baking sheet or other tray works well for this part of the process.  Also, the leaves can be harvested in the fall and dried separately from the flower petals.
