It was an important in 2nd century BCE Egypt where it was grown for food and medicine and as an ingredient in liquor. Anise is a carminative and drinking star anise tea after meals can help digestive ailments such as indigestion, gas, bloating, and constipation. It can help relieve problems like intestinal cramping if you’re suffering from spasms from poor digestion. It’s an antispasmodic that can help to relieve the muscular cramping that causes pain in the digestive tract. The Native Americans called anise “Tut-te See-hua”, which means, “It expels the wind”. Anise was one of the ingredients in mustaceus, a special cake made with digestive herbs that was served as a finishing dish for marriage feasts. This may be the origin of the modern-day wedding cake. Anise may also help relieve menstrual cramps and is particularly good when taken as a tea. Anise seed can help stimulate the pancreas, part of the body that’s responsible for regulating insulin and some hormones, possibly helping to lower risk for diabetes and other hormonal problems. Anise contains chemicals that might have estrogen-like effects and may help symptoms of menopause. Anise seed can help relieve cough and colds, working as an expectorant that thins the mucous in the respiratory system. Star anise is the major source of the chemical compound shikimic acid, a primary precursor in the pharmaceutical synthesis of the anti-influenza drug oseltamivir (Tamiflu).  An industrial method for the production of shikimic acid using fermentation of E. coli bacteria was discovered in 2005, and applied in the 2009 swine flu pandemic to address Tamiflu shortages, also causing price increases for star anise as a raw material of shikimic acid.  For this reason, it’s also often included in home remedies for teas to ease cold and flu symptoms. Anise tea can help relax the body, relieve insomnia, and reduce nightmares. Anise oil is derived from the star-shaped fruit of the tree. It is added to diffusers, handmade soaps, candles, and more. Anise oil can destroy lice and other biting, itch-inducing insects. Anise oil used alone or in combination with cheese has the reputation of being an excellent bait for mousetraps. In 1305, King Edward I declared anise a taxable drug and the revenue earned through its import helped repair damages to the London Bridge. In Biblical times, anise was so highly prized that it was often used for tithes and offerings. It is mentioned in both the gospels of Luke and Mark. Historical Uses: digestion, indigestion, flatulence (gas), bloating, constipation, digestive pain, menstrual cramps, diabetes, high blood sugar, cough, chest congestion, bronchitis, cold, flu, respiratory infection, swine flu, SARS, relaxation, sleeplessness, insomnia, nightmares, head lice, low estrogen, menopause, aphrodisiac, sexual desire, antifungal, athlete’s foot, toenail fungus, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral Mystical Attributes:  Anise possesses properties associated with psychic powers that can amplify psychic abilities and heighten spiritual awareness. It is reputed to aid in the development of clairvoyance, intuition, and other psychic faculties. Anise has been used as an offering to entice and call forth spirits to aid in magical operations. Hang an anise seed head from your bedpost to restore lost youth. Use anise in dream pillows to keep away nightmares and ensure a good night’s sleep. Fresh anise leaves or anise seeds used in a potpourri will protect a room from evil spirits and intentions. Anise seeds carried in a sachet will ward off the evil eye. They are sometimes placed around the magic circle to protect the magician from evil spirits. It can be used in holy waters for blessings and exorcisms. Anise has long been known as an aphrodisiac.  It was used by the Greeks to help enhance romance for lovers.  Modern research shows that anise actually does increase attraction among people. It is said that the scent stirs up lust. Anise aids in divination and may be added to a ritual bath and/or burned while meditating or divining. Some burn star anise pods on charcoal when scrying, reading tarot, or using other divination tools. Anise seed is also used in purification baths, especially with bay leaves. Add star anise pods to a simmer pot.   Taste & Smell:  Anise seed has a strong, licorice-like taste and a sweet mildly spicy fragrant aroma. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Star anise (Illicium verum) and Anise (Pimpinella anisum) are different plants with different origins. Illicium verum is native to Asia, while Pimpinella anisum is native to the Mediterranean and Southwest Asia. Illicium verum is an evergreen tree or shrub, while Pimpinella anisum is a flowering plant. Both star anise and anise have a licorice-like flavor, but star anise has a stronger flavor. Star Anise (Illicium Verum) is native to southern China and northeast Vietnam, but is now cultivated in the southeast Atlantic region of North America, Central America, the Caribbean, Japan, Korea, Laos, the Philippines, and Taiwan. Illicium Verum is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 49 feet tall. It has glossy, leathery leaves that grow in bunches of three to six. The star-shaped fruits are made up of a ring of carpels attached to a central column. The seeds are shiny brown or reddish and have a high oil content. Star anise is slow-growing and can take five to six years to produce small harvests. It does best in deep, rich, free-draining clay and loam soils with a pH of 4.0 to 6.5. It can tolerate part shade to shade, but some varieties can tolerate more sun if they have enough moisture. Harvest the star-shaped pericarps (seed pods) of Illicium verum just before ripening. This is usually 3-4 months after the tree flowers. In the morning when it is dewy, cut off an entire umbel and dry it indoors. This prevents the seeds from falling off. Store seeds in a cool dry place. They will germinate well for about two years, and about half as well after three or four years. Contraindications & Toxicity: Anise essential oil contains anethole, which can be irritating to sensitive skin. Do not use during pregnancy. Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum), a similar tree, is highly toxic and inedible. In Japan, it has instead been burned as incense.  Cases of illness, including “serious neurological effects, such as seizures”, reported after using star anise tea, may be a result of deliberate economically motivated adulteration with this species. Japanese star anise contains the neurotoxin anisatin, which also causes severe inflammation of the kidneys (nephritis), urinary tract, and digestive organs when ingested. Swamp star anise Illicium parviflorum is a similar tree found in the Southern United States, and due to its toxicity, it should not be used for folk remedies or as a cooking ingredient. Star anise essential oil can irritate the skin when applied topically. Never apply any essential oil neat, always dilute it with a carrier oil.   Constituents: Volatile oil Coumarins Flavonoid glycosides Phenylpropanoids Lipids Fatty acids Sterols Proteins Carbohydrate     Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
