It is one of the most expensive woods in the world. It has a warm, rich, complex and exotic scent, that has a calming and sedative effect, and has long been used in spiritual practices of both the East and the West. The heartwood resin is often blended into herbal incenses and used as a base.  It isn’t technically a resin, but a powdered, shredded, or chipped wood.  Sandalwood is generally associated with spirituality, purification, meditation, peace, healing, and protection. It combines well with the sacred resins of frankincense and myrrh. The heartwood of the tree is believed to have potent aphrodisiac properties. Historical Uses:  aphrodisiac, calm, stress, depression, anxiety, sedating, nervousness, moodiness, ADHD, PTSD Mystical Attributes:  Sandalwood incense is burned for banishing, purification, clearing, to exorcise demons and evil ghosts, for protection from evil spirits, and to ward off negative energy. Red Sandalwood is used to calm the mind, conjure beneficial spirits (for this, blend with lavender), promote spiritual awareness, for astral projection, for trancework, meditation, to stimulate clairvoyance, to boost psychic powers (for this, blend with Acacia), to aid in seeing past lives, and for Kabbalah. Sandalwood is recommended for use when consecrating altar cloths, and it is said to be associated with Hod on the Tree of Life. Sandalwood is an excellent incense to include in blends for Full Moon Esbats and offerings. The scent of sandalwood is believed to be one of the most pleasing to the gods. In India, sandalwood has been used as a holy incense since the beginning of time. The incense is burned in nearly every Hindu home and temple. The wood is carved into prayer beads, the ground powder is made into a paste for anointing the forehead, and it is reverently placed on funeral pyres. Sandalwood incense is helpful for healing rituals and in wish-magic. Write your wish on a piece of paper. Wrap the paper around a chip or chips of sandalwood, then burn in censer or cauldron while visualizing your wish manifesting. A blend of sandalwood and frankincense is believed to be very inviting to angels. In American folk magic, sandalwood chips are added to mojo bags for safety, security, and peace of mind.
