It can enhance physical endurance, enhance sexual potency, improve thyroid function, thymus and adrenal function, and protects the nervous system, heart and liver through antioxidant effects. Rhodiola increases the body’s resistance to stress and has a protective effect upon neurotransmitters (especially serotonin and dopamine). As an adaptogen similar to ginseng, rhodiola helps with memory and brain function, learning, concentration, headache, stress, nervousness, and depression. In a clinical trial with young healthy hospital doctors working night shifts, given rhodiola extract, after 2 weeks showed significantly fewer signs of mental fatigue and better levels of concentration and short-term memory. Due to its adaptogenic properties, rhodiola is thought to help alleviate fatigue. Rhodiola has been claimed to improve endurance, sports performance, and work rate by reducing physical and mental fatigue and increasing antioxidant activity. Rhodiola has a slightly stimulating effect and has been shown to improve exercise performance by decreasing perceived exertion, or how hard participants felt their bodies were working.
