This member of the magnolia family produces berries that are harvested as food and tea flavorings, syrups and other beverages. In China, Schizandra is regarded the “quintessence of Chinese tonic herbs.” The Chinese also call the plant Wu Wei Zi, meaning “five fruit flavors” because Schizandra berries invoke all five elements of taste perception — salty, sweet, sour, pungent and bitter. As a tonic, schizandra can help anyone to have better overall health, arguably the ultimate tonic herb. And it does not have the side effects associated with many of the “inferior” liver cleansing herbs. Schizandra is an herb that is particularly helpful for someone who is recovering from a serious illness. It can help to restore normal health and vitality and improve energy levels. It will tone and strengthen the immune system to increase physical performance and endurance and promotes recovery after surgery. It will also enhance athlete’s performance and improve liver detoxification and functions. Schizandra can help the liver to work properly. It helps to remove toxins from the body and can even be a help for people who suffer from hepatitis. Shisandra is the source of schizandrin C, which is actually used to produce the anti-hepatitis drug called dibromodulcitol (DBD). For colds or other types of respiratory infection, schizandra can help to loosen the tightness and congestion in the chest. It will actually thin the mucus, allowing for more productive coughs. Schisandra has also been found to improve lung function. People who suffer from chronic skin conditions will find that schizandra may provide relief. It can help to soothe the inflammation and irritation that comes from psoriasis or eczema. It can also relieve pain. Schizandra is believed to improve sex drive. It helps the sexual organs to function properly, increasing drive and stamina. Schizandra can help with stress and anxiety, as well as improve focus, concentration, and memory. It promotes vitality and increases cognitive function. The types of lignans found in schizandra may also protect against neuronal cell damage and Alzheimer’s Disease. Schisandra is a superfood berry that has also been used for centuries for the production of thick and shiny hair and firm skin. It is a popular herb of wealthy men and women in China, especially the women of the imperial court, because of its youth preserving and rejuvenating effects. It helps hair become fuller and shinier, and helps skin retain moisture and become clear and fine after several months. It is also often used to help diarrhea as well as ease frequent or leaking urination (incontinence). Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Schisandra chinensis is native to forests of Northern China and the Russian Far East. It is a deciduous woody climbing vine of the Schisandraceae family. Flowers on a female plant will only produce fruit when fertilized with pollen from a separate male plant. However, the “Eastern Prince” is a hybrid which produces perfect flowers and is self-fertile. The schizandra vine will grow vertically to 29 feet or more on stakes or a trellis (like grape vines). The flowers are similar in form to the peony. They are four to five inches across, are pure white, and sit in a ruffled collar of green-and-white variegated leaves. Only the new leaves surrounding the blossoms are variegated. Along the stem, the leaves are solid green, grouped in threes, and slightly heart shaped. The blossoms are lightly fragrant and on the female plants are followed by brownish red berries. The plant grows for 4 to 5 years before you can harvest berries. Schizandra plants require conditions of moderate humidity and light. The plant grows in mixed forests, especially on the margins, and is also found by streams and brooks in part shade. It prefers a moist, well-drained sandy soil. Sow seeds in the autumn in a cold frame. Stored seed will do best if pre-soaked for 12 hours in warm water in the spring. They can then be sown in a greenhouse. Germination can be slow and erratic. Transplant out the seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle and grow them on in light shade in the greenhouse for their first 2 years. Plant them out into their permanent locations in early summer. Schizandra fruit is harvested after the first frosts and sun-dried for later use. Store dried schizandra berry and schizandra berry powder in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Avoid in fever. High doses may cause mild GIT disturbances (reduces appetite, heartburn, nausea, indigestion, headaches, skin rash). Theoretically can interfere with metabolism of many drugs due to effect of liver and gastric secretions. People allergic to shisandra may experience rashes on their eyelids, backs of hands, chest, and lower back. May interact with medications metabolized by CYP2C9 liver enzymes. May reduce the effects of anticoagulant drugs, such as warfarin (coumadin).   Constituents: Lignans (schizadrin, gomisin, deoxyschizandrin and pregomisin) Phytosterols (beta-sitosterols, stigmasterol) Citric Acid Malic Acid Tartaric Acid Protocatechuic Acid Volatile oils Nutrients (Vitamins A, C, E)     Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
