The anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiseptic properties have a soothing effect on itchy irritated scalp and may help prevent scalp infections. And its fresh sweet aroma lingers in the hair. A 2021 study also found that topical application of geranium oil may help reduce signs of skin aging. It is believed to help eliminate dead skin cells and help tighten skin, and also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothing itching and symptoms of dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. It may also help reduce the appearance of scarring. Some scented geraniums have a pleasant smell like licorice or chocolate when touched that can repel snakes. A plot of red geraniums, planted near the Witch’s cottage or the front door, tell of coming visitors by their movements. The flowers were magically charged to point to the direction of the approaching strangers and thus warn the Witch of their impending arrival. Red geraniums are used in protection sachets, and the fresh leaves are rubbed onto doorknobs and windows for home protection. Curanderos in contemporary Mexico cleanse and heal patients by brushing them with red geraniums, together with fresh rue and pepper tree branches. Rose (pink) geraniums are used in love spells and bring friendship. White geraniums increase fertility, and are thought to drive away snakes. Wild geraniums are associated with love, peace, joy, health, fertility, and spirituality. Some say that gifting wild geraniums can be similar to wishing someone a life full of joy and good fortune. Geranium oil is considered the oil of love and trust. It soothes anger, sadness, and feelings of grief, disappointment, and abandonment. And it promotes forgiveness of others and the self. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Geranium is a native flower of South Africa, where there are more than 240 wild species of geranium found. It is now cultivated throughout the world. It is most commonly cultivated for the extraction of its sweet-smelling essential oil. Geraniums can grow in many types of soil and in containers, hanging baskets, or flower beds. They prefer full sun and at least six hours of sunlight per day. If growing under glass, they should be protected from direct sunlight in the summer. Geraniums thrive in well-draining, high quality, neutral or alkaline soil. The aeration of heavy clay soil can be improved by adding perlite and organic matter. The plants often do best in containers, which provide drainage and keep the plants off the ground, where they are less likely to get fungal disease. Use well-drained pots with lots of drainage holds. Geraniums need regular fertilizer. Geraniums can be prone to both over and underwatering. They should be watered thoroughly and deeply, but allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings to avoid root rot. You can also create a watering reservoir around each plant by leaving an irrigation furrow to help the water pool and filter down through the soil. Regularly deadhead and remove faded flowers to encourage new growth and blooms throughout the season. New geraniums can be propagated from cuttings by taking a 12cm long cutting from a healthy plant and pacing it in water or soil until it develops roots. You can optionally dip the end of the cutting in rooting hormone powder, but some gardeners recommend against it because it can cause root rot. You can also let the cutting dry out for 12-24 hours before placing it in water or soil to help prevent root rot. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing.
