When a lodestone wand or spoon is placed on a smooth bronze plate, it rotates to a north-south axis. The oldest known compass dates back to the Chinese Han Dynasty (200 BCE to 200 CE). It was a spoon-shaped instrument made of lodestone on top of a bronze plate known as a “heaven plate”. The heaven plate shows eight trigrams of the I Ching, the 24 directions (based on the constellations) and the 28 lunar mansions. The compass wasn’t used for navigation, but for geomancy, the guiding principle of Feng Shui. This compass would have been used to help determine where was the best location would be for a building, burials, or other important questions. Later, the Chinese first discovered that when they magnetized iron needles by rubbing them with lodestones, they could make compasses for navigational purposes. The needles were suspended in water or suspended from a silk thread. Because they are naturally magnetized, the stones point towards the earth’s magnetic poles. Lodestone can help mend relationships that have split apart, as well as bring romantic couples closer together. At a special ancient Roman festival, an Iron statue of the war God Mars and a lodestone statue of the love Goddess Venus, were literally drawn to one another in a sacred wedding. From this union was born Cupid, their son who deftly wields his bow and arrow to make people fall in love. In China, lodestone was incorporated into divining boards used to predict the future. Description:  Lodestones are pieces of naturally magnetized magnetite that possess polarity and strongly attract. They are naturally occurring magnets, which can attract iron and other magnetic objects. Lodestone is one of the few minerals found naturally magnetized. Only a small amount of magnetite becomes lodestone. The leading theory is that lodestones are created by lightning bolts that strike near a magnetite deposit. Most lodestone is found near the surface of the Earth, rather than buried deep below. Pieces of lodestone, suspended so they could turn, were the first magnetic compasses, and their importance to early navigation is indicated by the name lodestone, which in Middle English means “course stone” or “leading stone”. The name “magnet” may have come from lodestones found in Magnesia, Anatolia (a peninsula in West Asia that makes up the majority of the land area of Turkey or to an imprecise line from the Black Sea to the Gulf of Alexandretta). The ancient Indian Sanskrit medical text Sushruta Samhita describes using magnetic properties of the lodestone to remove arrows embedded in a person’s body. Lodestone is found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks worldwide, with notable locations including Magnet Cove, Arkansas, and areas of Spain, Australia, and Mexico. It is also found in the Czech Republic, Italy, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and in the U.S. in Arizona, California, Georgia, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Utah and Vermont. CLEANSING AND CHARGING Be sure to cleanse your Lodestone when received, and charge with your own energy and intentions. Use your feather fan to waft over it the smoke of purifying incense. Use sound vibrations from a singing bowl, bells, or tingsha chimes while quickly and carefully passing through the flame of a black or red candle. Place in a (preferably Selenite or Clear Quartz, just not any kind of metal) bowl on top of a bed of dead sea salt and leave soaking in the moonlight for at least four hours. Remove from the bowl, rinse for 30 seconds in (ideally natural, like a stream or in the rain) running water, then gently dry with a cloth (BE CAREFUL with stones that may easily scratch). Hold in your left hand (if wearing for receiving intentions) or right hand (if wearing for emitting intentions) and meditate your intentions and energy onto the stones for half an hour. Alternatively, cleanse by smudging then holding under running water (or leaving out in rainwater) for at least 30 seconds, dry, and gently place in a bed of sea salt on a windowsill after sunset for a few hours. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Because your gemstones can absorb negative energy, avoid allowing others to touch or handle them and be sure to cleanse regularly. Recharge as needed by placing in the sunlight or moonlight for a few hours, or by burying in the earth for a day or two. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Do not use heat or steam to clean. Avoid prolonged exposure to water or sunlight. Avoid contact with hard surfaces, and take care not to subject to hard bumps or sharp blows.   Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
