Also a symbol of love, the Greeks used Oregano in marriage ceremonies to bring joy. The herb is often used in love spells. And is sometimes included in love attraction amulets and charm bags. Sprigs of Oregano have been burned during funeral services and fresh sprigs placed in the grave to bring peace and protection to the departed. Oregano is also added to protection sachets for safe travels. Taste & Smell:  An intense, warm, spicy, herbaceous, camphorous, slightly medicinal-like aroma Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Oregano (Origanum Vulgare) is an aromatic perennial herb found in the Mediterranean region. It is a perennial herb that grows up to 80cm in height, with dark oval fragrant leaves and white, pink, or purple flowers formed in spikes. To grow from seed, fill small pots with peat-free seed compost and water well, allowing to drain. Sow a few seeds on the surface of the compost. To germinate, place pots in either a heated propagator or on a warm windowsill. When seedlings are large enough to handle, pot into larger pots. Oregano needs a lot of full sun and good drainage (best in a free-draining compost in porous pots such as terracotta). The plant suffers in wet soil, so if planting in the ground, use heavy soil and make sure to include a handful of grit in the planting hole. Water sparingly throughout the growing season. Harvest leaves as needed by either pinching with your thumb and finger or using scissors. Cut back plants completely in midsummer to encourage fresh new leaves. Alternatively, allow the plants to flower to provide nectar and pollen for bees. Plants will die back in the winter and regrow from the woody stems in the spring. In the spring, re-pot into fresh compost with added slow-release fertilizer. Cut the woody stems back to the base of the plant to encourage fresh new growth. To store fresh undried Oregano frozen, freeze into ice cubes. To dry Oregano, harvest and bundle large bunches together in a large paper bag, then hang upside down to dry in a cool, dry place (even from a hanger in a closet) for a couple of weeks, then shake the stems while still in the bag to release remaining leaves. Store whole or crumbled dry leaves in an airtight container. Discard the stems. Contraindications & Toxicity: In excess, may cause stomach upset. Avoid if pregnant or nursing. Large amounts may cause miscarriage. Do not use if allergic to Lamiaceae family plants, including Basil, Hyssop, Lavender, Marjoram, Mint, and Sage. Large amounts may increase the risk of bleeding.
